As an Aviation Safety Assistant (Office Automation), you will provide administrative, semi-technical and automation support to the office staff by obtaining background data, preparing reports, reviewing applications and interviewing applicants for certificates, processing certificates, entering into and extracting information from various automated systems and programs, and maintaining technical and administrative files. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Processing FAA-issued airman certificates such as an FAA designated representative, mechanics, repairmen, flight engineers and pilots. Processing FAA authorizations such as inspection authorization, aircrew program designee, aerobatic competency, etc. Processing FAA issued operator and air agency certificates such as air carrier, repair stations, and approved schools. Examining applications and supporting documents for completeness, consistency of information, and fulfillment of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) requirements. Assisting with the orientation and training of new examiners and with required annual and periodic training as needed. Researching appropriate handbooks, collecting information, organizing material pertinent to meetings and training sessions such as pre-certification, examiner renewal, inspector authorization, and flight examiner and written test examiner indoctrinations. Responsible for assigning technical and administrative files such as certificated operator and designee case files in accordance with agency directives. Assembling and entering information into various automated programs and systems. Providing various other related general office and administrative support as assigned.

To qualify at the FG-303-6 level, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower level of FG/GS-5 or equivalent. Examples of specialized experience may include but is not limited to: performing a variety of technical administrative work such as preparing complex reports; assisting in interpreting and implementing newly modified agency directives and determining action needed; researching, writing and typing technical and non-technical correspondence and reports; coordinating unit schedule and instructing personnel on administrative policies and procedures; researching technical data, reviewing and analyzing complex information, interpreting directives, examining documents for accuracy and completeness; entering and retrieving information from a variety of automated systems; and explaining administrative requirements and processes to customers with minimal supervision and/or guidance.

This position requires the skills of a fully qualified typist (minimum of 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with 3 or fewer errors).
