Our Professional Development and Inclusion department has an opportunity for an experienced Diversity and Inclusion Manager to join us in our Kansas City, MO office. The Diversity and Inclusion Manager provides managerial, operational, and strategic support to the Chief Diversity and Professional Development Officer (CDPDO) and is an ex officio member of the Firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee. Collaborates with practice group leaders, the D&I ambassadors in each office, the Professional Development Manager, the firm’s Business Resource Groups, other Firm departments and the Board as determined by the CDPDO on projects and tasks related to the Firm’s diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chief Diversity and Professional Development Officer may assign other duties as needed to meet departmental goals; however, this position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:


Contributes to the Firm’s diversity and inclusion strategy by proposing new best practices for the Firm and providing recommendations to the CDPDO as appropriate.

Collaborates with the CDPDO and the Professional Development Manager to set annual departmental goals and action plans.


Assists the CDPDO in the creation and monthly monitoring of the department’s annual budget. Ensures all expenses are coded and reconciled promptly and correctly.

Develops and audits diversity and inclusion processes and procedures regularly to ensure maximum efficiency. Makes recommendations regarding updating policies and procedures designed to meet diversity and inclusion objectives.

Acts as liaison to the Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee and the Business Resource Groups, ensuring each has developed and executes on quarterly goals, strategies and action plans.

Collaborates with other departments (e.g. Client Services, Knowledge Management, Office Administration, Human Resources, Recruiting, Information Technology, and Learning and Employee Development) on diversity and inclusion-related initiatives (e.g. diversity marketing, presentations, award nominations, etc.).


Manages the D&I Coordinator, D&I Analyst and/or Administrative Assistant on various tasks and projects. Ensures they have everything they need to do these tasks and projects effectively.

Reports to and receives direction primarily from the CDPDO, but also from the Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee, Business Resource Group Co-chairs, Practice Group Leaders, Board of Directors, Firm executive staff, and attorneys as necessary.

Co-creates the annual Professional Development Plan (PDP) with each member of the D&I team in alignment with departmental needs and goals. Monitors its implementation in alignment with the guidance of the CDPDO and the department’s annual goals by meeting with each team member to ensure appropriate progress toward the PDPs, goals, and objectives.

Monitors and enforces PDI’s policies (e.g. Remote Work Policy, Dress Code Policy), PDI Roles and Responsibilities, and Overtime Guidelines.

Approves weekly time entry of D&I team members.

Program Development and Implementation

Identifies and develops appropriate training for maximum advancement/promotion and retention of diverse attorneys.

Works with Data Analyst to develop analytical tools and methods to measure the effectiveness of diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives and to monitor and report on the recruitment, retention, mentoring and promotion of diverse attorneys.

Ensures the accuracy and integrity of all diversity data, trends and other related information including reports for internal and external stakeholders. Spearheads the completion and delivery of all external diversity and inclusion related surveys, awards, and RFP/RFI responses both internally and externally.

Works with CDPDO and D&I Analyst to prepare for client diversity meetings, pitches, and/or requests regarding the Firm’s diversity and inclusion initiatives and/or metrics.

Plans and manages D&I events and ensures successful implementation. These tasks include the hosting of exhibit booths at local, regional or national job fairs; bar association conferences and Business Resource Group events, creating schedules, determining logistics needs, etc.

Plans for and attends Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee and Business Resource Group meetings. Works collaboratively with D&I Coordinator to ensure meeting goals, objectives, and discussions align with PDI’s Strategic Action Plan.

Works collaboratively with D&I Coordinator to prepare quarterly draft agenda and talking points for Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee meetings and to ensure follow-up action items are completed.

Works collaboratively with D&I Coordinator to set annual goals for Ambassadors and to ensure the D&I Coordinator is scheduling and executing upon quarterly conference calls/training opportunities and biannual in-person meetings.

Holds ultimate responsibility for progress of all Business Resource Groups and reports monthly to CDPDO on their status, ensuring regular meetings are held, appropriate resources are provided to meet their articulated goals.

Works collaboratively with D&I Coordinator and D&I Analyst to ensure all Business Resource Groups are meeting at least quarterly and that they are making progress on their goals and objectives.

Under guidance of CDPDO and in alignment with PDI’s Strategic Action Plan, contacts Co-chairs of each Business Resource Group at least bi-monthly and meets at least annually with Business Resource Group Co-chairs to discuss and plan for annual budget.


Communicates and markets the business case for diversity and inclusion to internal and external stakeholders.

Drives the drafting and delivery of internal and external diversity and inclusion communications, invitations, and advertisements. Gives input as requested on professional development communications.

Helps to draft D&I articles and supervises the compiling of appropriate information, reviews and edits the draft of the diversity and inclusion section of the department’s Annual Report and all issues of the quarterly newsletter, PDI Connection.

Maintains and grows relationships with national, local, and specialized diversity and inclusion organizations, professional development organizations, and bar associations as is relevant to the fulfillment of the department’s strategic action plan and goals.


Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required (Human Resources, Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing or Public Relations preferred)

Graduate degree OR at least three years related experience at a law firm, government agency, or professional services organization that includes diversity and inclusion policy, initiatives and/or programming, adult education and/or adult training (specifically diversity and inclusion and/or cultural competency training), content development and delivery, public speaking, strategic planning, budget planning and implementation, project management, database management, report writing, and/or event planning experience.

Strong analytical, written and verbal skills; excellent organizational skills; a detail oriented and proactive approach to projects; the ability to work well with minimal supervision; a strong client-service orientation.

Interest and commitment to diversity and inclusion issues is required.

Proficient in all Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Ability to become proficient in the Firm’s Document Management System, Smart Sheet, and expense and billing systems. Knowledge of Microsoft SQL is helpful.

Gravitas and confidence when articulating the diversity agenda.

Ability to manage multiple stakeholder relationships, sometimes with competing objectives.

Proven project management and supervisory skills.

Understanding of current diversity landscape within the private and public sectors.

Committed to providing the highest level of service to ensure the diversity and inclusion functions align with the goals of the Firm.

Ability to work successfully within politically sensitive environments.

Experience with successfully formulating and managing data reporting and analysis.

Ability to travel regularly to attend events on behalf of the PDI department.

Ability to periodically work both before and after normal business hours to oversee the implementation of the Firm’s professional development and inclusion programming and initiatives.
