Position Summary The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks an accomplished and creative academic leader for the position of Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise and vision in promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion for faculty as well as an outstanding academic career at a major academic medical institution.  The Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion will advise the JHU-SOM senior leadership team and lead strategic diversity and inclusion efforts that advance JHU-SOM’s mission and vision; collaborate with key university constituencies to develop and carry out initiatives that contribute to the achievement of diversity and inclusion goals; contribute to the recruitment, retention and career goals of underrepresented faculty; support the overarching goals of JHU faculty and academic leaders to enhance the SOM programs for diversity and inclusion, and health equity. The Associate Dean will serve as a resource for faculty about academic diversity and inclusion. Reporting Relationship The Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion JHU-SOM reports directly to the Vice Dean for Faculty who has broad responsibilities for supporting initiatives for faculty excellence and diversity.  The Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion works collaboratively with the team of Associate Deans in the Office of Faculty, and with the VP and Chief Diversity Officer of JHM in executing the JHU-SOM diversity strategic priorities/goals.   Major Duties & Responsibilities: The Associate Dean works as a member of the Office of the Vice Dean of Faculty, and within the Johns Hopkins Medicine Office of Diversity and Inclusion and carries the broad responsibilities for:   This position offers 50% effort as a faculty member in the JHU SOM with academic credentials as an Associate Professor or Professor.  Being a visible and accessible leader for faculty underrepresented in medicine. Providing leadership and direction for diversity and inclusion initiatives, including implementation of the SOM programs and initiatives to recruit, retain and advance a diverse faculty and postgraduate trainees. Working collaboratively with SOM leaders, Department Directors, Division Chiefs, Vice Deans of Education, and Diversity Councils/Committees to advance the institution’s commitment to recruitment, retention and advancement of a diverse institution. Work closely with faculty and administrator search committees, and department directors providing effective strategies for identifying diverse candidates and addressing bias in the screening and selection process.   Serving as the designated institutional representative to the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) Group on Diversity and Inclusion. Providing annual reports to the Vice Dean of Faculty, the Vice President/Chief Diversity Officer JHM and the team of Associate Deans on SOM faculty diversity initiatives, demographic trends, strategic goals and objectives outcomes, and future plans Collaborating with the offices of Vice Dean of Education, Associate Dean for Institutional and Student Equity, JHU Office of Multicultural Affairs, JHU office of Education and Office of Women in Science and Medicine on cultivating new initiatives, and implementing and evaluating existing efforts Providing mentoring, peer support and sponsorship to faculty from underrepresented groups. Co-sponsoring educational experiences, curricular, and co-curricular that foster faculty, learning in diversity and Inclusion, cultural and linguistic competency, health equity, implicit bias and other multicultural instruction Goals & Expectations Demonstrate a collaborative and transparent leadership style; strong interpersonal skills; and excellent written and oral communications Demonstrate program development skills and the ability to track, analyze and disseminate information on effort/program evaluation Demonstrate ability to collaborate with and advise faculty from all backgrounds and especially those underrepresented in medicine To be represented on search committees as a recognized leader on diversity & inclusion to recruit and retain diverse faculty Educational Qualifications & Skills: MD, PhD with demonstrated academic achievements required. Academic credentials as an Associate Professor or Professor. Exhibit in-depth contemporary knowledge of the culture of academic medicine and the issues of access, inclusion, diversity, equity and multiculturalism 4-6 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education. Previous experience working with diverse faculty populations. Experience using research to help advance campus & diversity initiatives. Demonstrated experience in building and advancing institutional diversity and inclusion initiatives for faculty, students, and staff, desirable. Previous experience, understanding, and passion for diversity and inclusion including health disparities and cultural competencies, desirable. Ability to demonstrate a track record of successfully working collaboratively in a team environment with senior leaders of the organization.
