The Custodian will perform a wide variety of custodial and maintenance duties in and around the Northwest Regional Center campus facilities; troubleshoot, perform minor repairs and respond to emergency calls for service; implement set-up and takedown for a wide variety of campus and community events; work closely with Regional Center staff and the public to meet the custodial needs of the area. The Custodian resolves problems to ensure a clean, orderly and safe environment. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. with a 1 hour, unpaid lunch break. Summer hours will vary.
Specific Responsibilities
• Schedule, coordinate and perform routine and comprehensive custodial maintenance of assigned facilities.

• Clean and disinfect rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms and other work areas.

• Sweep, scrub, waxes, and polishes floors.

• Vacuum and shampoo rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies; identify stains and use proper chemicals for removal.

• Order and stock facilities with paper and supplies; maintain inventory and submit written requests for supplies; test and evaluate new supplies and equipment.

• Clean and polish lighting fixtures, trim, wood and metal surfaces and others areas as needed.

• Dust furniture and equipment.

• Wash walls, windows, door panels, sills, ceiling, and woodwork according to schedule.

• Remove trash and waste to disposal area in accordance with established procedures.

• Perform various maintenance and custodial duties such as installation and repair to fixtures in restrooms, labs and classrooms.

• Troubleshoots and repairs minor plumbing and electrical problems; replace a variety of light bulbs and lighting accessories.

• Support snow and ice removal operations, as required.

• Perform preventative maintenance in and around facilities.

• Police exterior grounds on a regular basis and operates mechanized equipment to assist in this task.

• Operate power equipment such as forklifts, carpet extractors, pressure washers, hand and power tools and campus vehicles.

• Report and respond to emergency calls for custodial assistance.

• Deliver messages as requested.

• Transport small equipment or tools between rooms and departments; set up tables and chairs in assembly areas, public common areas and other areas as directed.

• Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional, helpful and courteous manner.

• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED required.

• Valid driver's license and access to personal vehicle required.

• One (1) year of custodial or related experience required.

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

• Ability to write simple correspondence required.

• Ability to perform simple math calculations using units of American money and weight measurement required.

• Ability to use independent judgment when troubleshooting problems and dealing with varied and unique problems and requests for assistance required.

• Strong customer service skills required.

• Knowledge of maintaining, cleaning and preserving a variety of surfaces, proper use of a wide range of chemicals according to state and federal regulations; handling and disposing of hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens with care required.

• Demonstrated ability to operate and perform light maintenance on various machines required; (For example forklifts, carpet extractors, pressure washers, hand and power tools, buffers, exterior vacuum equipment and snow blowers.)

• Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds unassisted required.

• Ability to work under inclement weather conditions required.

• Ability to obtain or complete safety training certifications as needed.

• Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment inclusive of students, faculty and staff of varying social economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds required.
Preferred Qualifications
• Custodial and building maintenance in a school, college or university setting preferred.

• Background in construction trades preferred.
