Overview

Reporting to the Dean of the Graduate School, the Associate Dean for Access, Diversity and Inclusion has primary responsibility for planning, implementation, and assessment of the School's goals related to access, diversity, and inclusion. This individual leads a staff of five to advance a critical imperative for Princeton University as articulated by the Board of Trustees in its 2013 Ad Hoc Committee report and 2016 strategic framework document.

The Associate Dean partners with multiple constituencies within the Graduate School and with colleagues in the Office of the Provost, Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, Office of the Dean of the College, academic departments and programs, and others. This individual seeks to improve access, recruitment, experience, inclusion, and success of students that have been historically underrepresented or marginalized in graduate education, including racial and ethnic minorities, women, first-generation students, low-income students, LGBT students, people with disabilities, and others. In addition, the Associate Dean supports all graduate students, faculty members, and staff in engaging with diversity and difference in graduate education.

The Associate Dean also serves as a member of the Graduate School senior staff and as a critical voice on all issues relating to graduate students and graduate education.

The Graduate School offers a challenging and supportive work environment. Engaged and dedicated staff members within the office collaborate to improve the educational experience of all graduate students at Princeton. The work itself is extraordinarily rewarding: it is multi-faceted, always evolving, and meaningful.

Responsibilities

Access and Recruitment

Develop and implement plans—in close partnership with academic departments—for the recruitment of individuals who will enhance the diversity of the graduate student community.

Partner with internal and external pipeline/pathways initiatives, selected colleges and universities, and other entities to identify and encourage promising candidates to apply to Princeton's graduate programs.

Collaborate with the Office of the Dean of the College in programming for the new Presidential Scholars Program, which aims to increase the diversity of the national doctoral population.

Student Experience and Success

Serve as a mentor and adviser to current students, with an emphasis on active outreach to students at critical junctures in their academic/professional development and to those in distress.

Partner with colleagues within the Graduate School and in academic departments and programs on promoting successful academic advising, progress towards key milestones, degree completion, placement, and a positive climate.

Collaborate with colleagues across campus to create programming that provides opportunities for education, mentorship, growth, and engagement.

Work with colleagues within the Graduate School and within the Office of Career Services to develop and implement professional development activities for graduate students.

Build authentic community and fellowship among students from historically underrepresented groups. Advocate for the support of graduate students from such backgrounds. Collaborate with student groups in serving the graduate student population.

General

Manage a full-time professional staff of five and part-time graduate students serving as Diversity Fellows. Oversee a budget that supports a broad range of diversity and inclusion programs and activities.

Develop, implement, and maintain methodologies to assess access, diversity, and inclusion efforts within the Graduate School and its departments/programs.

Serve as the principal liaison between the Graduate School and the Office of the Provost on topics and initiatives relevant to access, diversity, and inclusion.

Engage with faculty members, prospective applicants, alumni, community members, and staff as a visible and accessible member of the Graduate School.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a creative and strategic thinker with the ability to implement a newly developed plan for advancing diversity at the Graduate School. This individual must garner the respect and confidence of faculty leaders across disciplines and be seen as an approachable resource and partner to them. Demonstrated experience working with underrepresented students or scholars is required.

The Associate Dean will have strong analytical and evaluation skills and comfort with qualitative and quantitative data; experience managing budgets and staff; an orientation towards action and accountability; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong collaborative skills for teamwork and consensus building; demonstrated leadership ability, excellent judgment, and a high level of integrity; and the ability to work independently on concurrent projects under pressure of multiple deadlines.

The ideal candidate will have a doctorate and seven to ten years of full-time administrative experience in higher education or a related field. The role requires occasional travel and work on evenings and weekends.

Review of applications will begin on November 20, 2017, and will continue until the position is filled. The new Associate Dean will be expected to begin no later than July 1, 2018.

Please provide a cover letter with your application materials.
