All of our programs, as an integrated model, work to reduce the gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our society through a cross-generational approach. The Wirrpanda Foundation has a national reach with offices in Western Australia, Victoria and ACT, with approximately 57 staff of which 86% are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.Job DescriptionINTRODUCTION: The AEO position is provided for with support from DET and the Regional Office. RATIONALE Gosnells PS and Ashburton PS employs an AEO to work with Indigenous Students and the School Community to: •    Provide assistance to the teaching and learning programs for teachers working with Aboriginal students. •    Facilitate discussion and pastoral care support for Aboriginal students.•    Provide care and assistance in the school environment for Aboriginal students.. •    Collaborate with the Student Service Team for the analysis of data and review processes that will help to support the ongoing development of the Aboriginal students.•    Liaise with community agencies for the support of Aboriginal students.•    Monitor and develop strategies to improve the retention and participation of Aboriginal students.The following outlines the duties and roles of an AEO partnership with our school: COMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONALThe AEO uses effective communication and interpersonal skills to:•    Facilitate discussions between parents, students and teachers where there are communication difficulties, and shares information with parents•    Participate in Students Services Meetings.•    Encourage indigenous parent, industry and community involvement in the school and .provides a point of contact within the school for the Aboriginal community.•    Work in collaboration with the Student Service Manager’s•    Collaborate with the Principal and the Deputy Principals to inform them of any concerns and programs dealing with Aboriginal students.•    Assume an active role in the ongoing promotion of a positive school tone and learning environment for Aboriginal Students. DIARY / PORTFOLIOThe Diary or Portfolio should be maintained by the AEO and used for documentation related to workplace learning and professional development.It should include:•     outcomes related to mentorship program•     network meetings•     reference group meetings•     school-based professional development•     training•     attendance at other meetings•     details relating to performance management.Note: Any issues relating specifically to individual Aboriginal Students needs to be recorded in the SIS student behaviour management files. (Procedural notes are available) TIMETABLE OF DUTIES•    An up-to-date and accurate timetable should be kept in the diary and displayed in the AEO’s office and a copy kept on file in the Student Service Area. SUPPORT FOR THE TEACHING AND LEARNING PROGRAMThe AEO assists the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs and with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment•    supports the well being of Aboriginal students by helping them become involved in school activities and encouraging them to stay at school•    identifies and represents the emotional and educational needs of indigenous students •    provides knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Islander history, language and culture to students.•    provides positive educational leadership to all staff dealing with Indigenous Students•    assists teachers to identify, plan, monitor and report on the literacy and numeracy skills of Aboriginal students at educational risk; •    helps support and create specific Aboriginal Education programs within the school. ORGANISATION-WORKING IN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTThe AEO assists teachers and the Student Service Team by:•    Coordination and conducting the tutorial class for the Aboriginal Students. •    Care and supervision of students in out-of-class activities and on school excursions•    Arrival and departure of indigenous students travelling on buses. •    Participation and management classes and support of the teaching and learning programs for Aboriginal Students. •    Attention to attendance records for Indigenous Students. •    Collaboration with associated team members to prepare Schools Plus applications relating to Aboriginal Students.•    Collaboration with the Administration team in the discipline of all Aboriginal students including suspensions procedures.•    Case management in collaboration with student services team and appropriate Deputy Principal Aboriginal students with challenging behaviours•    Provision of support for Aboriginal students in case conferences as required•    Liaison with respective year coordinators and other key school staff in planning and implementing effective  transition strategies for Aboriginal Students. DATA and REVIEW In collaboration with the associated Student Service Manager and the Deputy Principals the AEO will: •    Participate in Indigenous Policy and Review •    Participate in any identified special programs for Aboriginal Students.•    Contribute to reports for special programs as required by the Department and School. •    Monitor and collate data involved with Aboriginal student and referrals:•    Manage attendance procedures for Aboriginal Students and liaise with parents and guardians. •    Prepare, submit and manage budget, finances and assets within area of responsibilities (in cooperation with the Students Services Coordinators and Business Manager).•    Contribute to the development of the Annual School Report including all relevant BMIS and attendance data relevant to Aboriginal Students. SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY LIAISONIn collaboration with the Students Services Team and the Administrative Team the AEO will:•    Establish and maintain links with youth and family service providers•    Oversee in collaboration with the Student Services team implementation of school initiatives and programs with a variety of agencies and organizations for Indigenous Students. •    Help manage Aboriginal student welfare with the school. •    Establish community and interagency links for Indigenous Students. •    Work collaboratively with South Metro Education Office Student Services team to help support Aboriginal Students. •    Facilitate greater Aboriginal parent and community participation in the school; STUDENT PARTICIPATIONIn collaboration with the Students Services Team and the Administrative Team the AEO will:Initiate and implement special events programs and co-ordinate the organisation of NAIDOC:•    Week, reward lunches, and other special Indigenous events as required. •    Coordinate in conjunction with the year coordinator special activities (eg; reward lunches, graduation dinner)•    Helps monitor and improve the participation and retention rate of Aboriginal Students. BUDGET AND ASSETS MANAGEMENTIn collaboration with the Students Services Team and the Administrative Team the AEO will:•    Prepare cost centre budget for programs in Student Services in collaboration with the Manager Senior School for Aboriginal students. •    Manage assets within the Student Services area of responsibilities. PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENTIn collaboration with the Student Services Managers the AEO will; •    Follow the guidelines set for performance management•    Prepare documentation for review processes and reflective practices employed by Gosnells PS and Ashburton PS.Additional InformationTo apply for these roles candidates must –Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait IslanderAll your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.Job LocationI'm interested
